From the collection of Holli Thomas. The back of the photograph reads:
"Taken at Arthur's house - (This is the Buddha Ruth St. Denis left Arthur) May 1969"
The above photograph led us to the fascinating Ruth St. Denis.

Ruth St. Denis (1878 - 1968), considered the mother of modern dance.

The video above provides insight into Ruth's view of the dancer contributing to the 'betterment of mankind'. Her words in the interview are totally relevant to our world today. "Let us not wait for the world to be better, let us help to make it better." And by the looks of these photographs, help to make it more fabulous as well!
Part 1 of a multi-media project celebrating the life and legacy of Ruth St. Denis. Originally compiled for presentation at the National Musuem of Dance in January 2006.
